OPERATION EDUCATION
At Honor Flight Kern County, not only do we honor and thank our senior war heroes, but we also inspire future generations by sharing the stories of our veterans and demonstrating the power of gratitude and respect. One of the most impactful and enjoyable ways we do that is through Operation Education.
Presentations For Schools
Schools throughout Kern County have joined the journey to recognize our veterans in a number of different ways. If you would like to join them, please contact us using the email or telephone message number below.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Fund Raising – It costs approximately $1,500 to fly each veteran to Washington D.C. for three days and two nights which includes airfare, hotel, all meals, tour buses, and Honor Flight shirts. There is no cost to the veterans, which is why dozens of Kern County schools are anxious to raise money to put a “vet on a jet!” Schools that raise $1,500 are encouraged to nominate a veteran from their community, or if unable to do so, a veteran can be ‘adopted’ from the Honor Flight list of approved veterans. Priority is given to World War II vets, Korean War vets and then Vietnam vets. Please see our Veteran or FAQs pages for eligibility.
School Assemblies – Many schools invite our Honor Flight veterans to their assemblies to share their military and trip experiences.
“Mail Call” – For each flight, Honor Flight Kern County, solicits letters from family members and students throughout Kern County. These letters of appreciation for their military service are then distributed to the veterans on their flight home. It is a very touching and moving experience for the men and women to receive heartfelt gratitude from the youth of our county.
Please follow these guidelines:
• Do not date letters, so they can be used for any flight.
• All letters should be addressed to “Dear Veteran”.
Honor Flight serves all military branches.
• We screen all letters before giving to Veterans.
Please do NOT include comments about killing, missing limbs, blood, or death.
• Letters should not include any personal information such as student phone numbers or addresses.
• These should be “Thank You” letters to our Veterans for their service, appreciation for all they did for our country,
and good wishes for their trip to see their memorials.
When letters are ready to be picked up please call (661) 527-3838 or email info@honorflightkerncounty.org
